Depends on location. A friend of mine made a reservation recently and called the local office to let them know his wife was going to pick up the rental. She picked it up no questions asked. Maybe it's different here in Hawaii where everything is lax.
Was it an aisle location though? Local offices wouldn't be aisle locations, and even KOA wasn't aisle if I remember, so it wouldn't make much difference.
