I don't know why AC have this policy. Is there some sort of cost associated? Are they worried about losing or delaying a bag? As I understand it, the process is pretty automated and reliant upon the airport technology and staff once it gets dumped onto the belt.
I think it is a security one. They don't want a scenario where a guy checks a bag to London 18 hours ahead of time and then flies another airline to Tokyo and 15 hours later it explodes. That and they may not be set up to actually route it to the correct bin/gate/area/holding room/cart too early as the destination bin/gate/area/holding room/cart hasn't been set up. Too easy to lose luggage
