I tend to follow the same route you went. I usually book a long layover before my international trips (4 hours). When landing, I'll head to the QF lounge, have a beer and eat there. Then I head over to the Flagship lounge because as you said they have a better drink selection and the availability of the bottle water is great.
When I fly again in August I think I'll spend a little more time in the QF lounge if reports aren't better for the AC.
Ha that's funny- Cause I also live in Gilbert.... I do the same- I enjoy my lounge time before my long hauls. Although the showers in QF are not super nice or special, I enjoy taking a shower and having a few drinks before my flight. I usually book the midnight flights to HKG, so usually work that morning and get a little buzz then pass out on the flight over...
Have one coming up in a few weeks.. SWU in place- 30 open J but of course 0 C space avail yet.. Just wish AA would release sooner...
