I agree with others that you're running a risk, but what's the downside? If you miss your connection, you'll get put on the later flight that you're considering booking anyway. If, as is reasonably likely, you make your connection, you'll be home much earlier.

You're running a small risk that the later flight is full, but in October, I would certainly take that risk.
