Your point of view is perfectly valid. I am a risk-adverse person, so I would probably go to the expense and trouble of getting a Chinese visa. But, then, I live near Los Angeles where there is a Chinese consulate general not to far from where I live. I might share your opinion if I lived far away from a Chinese embassy or consulate.
