Your aunt must be a lovely person for you to even consider this.

IMHO gate checking is probably worse. It's going to end up on the carousel in Ontario anyway.

Will 28" square even fit through the x-ray?

Pack it in a large suitcase or box with foam pellets and check it.

Better yet, Purolator.
