Gate check/Sky check clarification

Is "gate check" or "sky check" or whatever the proper name is on AC any "safer" for a fragile item?

I have this 28"x28" wooden table top with glass on it that I am supposed to lug back to Ontario for an aunt and I know it doesn't meet sizing for carry-on. I was thinking perhaps if I did online check-in/boarding pass then I could just get it checked in at the gate sort of like a stroller? There wouldn't be additional baggage fees as I'm actually travelling J, I just can't see this ridiculous thing fitting in a bin. I would just be a bit concerned about it ending up tossed in the hold at the start of things even with a giant FRAGILE sticker on it. It is bubble wrapped and has styrofoam over the glass, but I haven't been able to find a box the right size locally for extra protection.

Suggestions?
