Bizarre experience regarding on-board Wi-Fi

Last week I few a return trip between IST and SEZ, with both legs operated by an A333, and had a somewhat puzzling experience.

On the flight to SEZ, one of our fellow business class passengers pointed to the Wi-Fi sign in front of the cabin, and asked the flight attendant how to use it, to which she replied: "sorry but the Wi-Fi doesn't work on this flight". Later due to my boredom, I tried to connect to the Wi-Fi anyway, and got connected without any problems. The browsing speed was quite decent.

On the flight back from SEZ, before we took off, one of the flight attendant actually used the PA and announced: "due to equipment problems, we are not able to offer Wi-Fi on this flight". I of course immediately tried to login, and again did so without any problems.

Why would they keep telling passengers that Wi-Fi doesn't work when it actually does? Do some of you have similar experiences?
