The only plane that has full recline in row 3 is the 737-900. All of the other planes have limited recline in row 3, especially the MD80 because coats are hung up just behind row 3 and they often make it impossible to recline these seats.
It's true that row 2 does not allow you to get out from a window seat as easily as row 1. Row 1 does not offer any stowage under a seat in front of you but then most people don't stow anything down there anyway -
Most Flight Attendants serve from the front to the back, so being in row 1 would allow first choice for meals. I try to alternate between starting the service at row 3 and row 1, or if there are a number of Gold MVP members on board I will try to start in the area most of them are in. It's not a guarantee but row 1 will, many times, allow you your first choice.
