I haven't done an AUP in well over a year, maybe two, so things like opup rules may have changed but whenever I did, I would always check which seat I would get before agreeing to the offer.
This is the approach I take, but it is usually during IRROPs, not doing an upgrade (I would usually be in the class of travel I wanted before arriving at the airport).
Asking what is available before agreeing is the best way of doing things, then you are not disappointed. If I was travelling CW and got stuck in IRROPs and now only an E/F seat was available, I would be asking to travel on a different flight/route.
