My guess would be that there was an oversell situation in economy and premium economy was full on that flight and someone paying for an upgrade removed the need for the airline to upgrade someone involuntarily from economy and that someone would have been upgraded from premium economy - in this case the person in the paid upgrade passenger's preferred seat
