Greek Village Taverna – Schaumburg, IL

Ok, I admit, I had promised myself never to visit this restaurant, it just seemed too much fluff and not enough substance. I also did something I rarely do and that is choose combination plates, two times!

My wife dislikes Greek food in general so it is a cuisine I don’t get to have very often (Happy wife, Happy life).

Last night however she had her Masters classes. So I was free to indulge how I pleased, Greek Food seemed to fit the bill and it is right around the corner from where I work.

To start I had the Cold Pikilia Sampler consisting of Taramosalata – fish roe spread, Melitzanosalata – roasted eggplant with garlic/VOO/vinegar, Scordalia – whipped garlic potato blended with VOO/lemon juice, Tirokafteri – imported feta heated with spices.

The Scordalia was just ok, Taramosalata was very good/great, Melitzanosalata & Tirokafteri were terrific.

Too bad the bread served was a mediocre, non-crusty, sesame loaf lacking a good dosing of sesame seeds. If the bread was a crusty loaf I would have enjoyed all of the above much more.

For the main course I had Taverna’s Mixed Grill Specialty which was a combination of two thin lamb loin chops, two pork kebobs, bifketia (ground beef & lamb patty seasoned with mint/chopped onions/herbs), all served with Greek style home fries. All were terrific. I must admit almost any marinated grilled meat is excellent to me but the meats had full intense, delicious flavor.

I now hope to go back and try a couple other dishes that stuck out to me: the stuffed grape leaves and Moussaka – ground beef & lamb layered with eggplant, potatoes, topped with mizithra cheese.
