You can save literally hundreds, or thousands (intl J) on doing this, but the downside is absolutely no protection.
Various ways to mitigate the risk, but a two hour connection and a nonrefundable second ticket is a super risky combination.
It's good to have a back-up plan, otherwise the only alternative may be purchase of a very expensive walk-up fare.
