Not quite true. While you can definitely do the above and use GGU's, you can also buy a qualifying instant upgrade fare (Y, S, B, M) and, provided there is U2 or greater, you will both be upgraded immediately.
this is correct, and i do it all the time with companion fares. U2 + M or above fares with an MVPG on the reservation will result in two upgrades, regardless of the status or lack thereof of the companion.
