Not quite true. While you can definitely do the above and use GGU's, you can also buy a qualifying instant upgrade fare (Y, S, B, M) and, provided there is U2 or greater, you will both be upgraded immediately.
Guess I have it wrong, sorry. So the companion can be upgraded to First without a GGU even though they have no status (so would not normally qualify for an instant upgrade)? I assume this is due to the Gold-and-higher "companion upgrade"? I always (wrongly) assumed that didn't come into play until the window opened.
