An old EC261 story, revived

Hey folks,

I’ll try to keep it short. A couple of years ago, me and my wife were on a LHR-DOH-HKT ticket which was delayed going out of LHR (brand new A380, held on the tarmac and then returned to the gate for 4 hours). We landed at DOH with an almost 4-hour delay, but made our intended connection as I had allowed for a 6-hour overnight layover at DOH. We arrived at HKT on time.

As my original layover was intended to be overnight, I had booked the Airport Hotel at DOH, which I was unable to cancel on the day, so I essentially paid for an 8-hour booking for barely an hour’s sleep (had I known this would happen, I would have slummed it at the recliners).

I contacted QR and gave them the whole EC261 spiel, claiming for the LHR-DOH leg exclusively. QR consistently claimed that the plane had an "unexpected flight safety shortcoming" (short for technical problem) and this was totally unforeseen. After various emails of me saying that EC261 does not cover them in the event of technical issues, all I was able to get was $150 in vouchers (didn't ascertain if that was per passenger), but I never accepted them. At the time, I was intending to continue pursuing this, but after some time went by, I let the whole thing go and never wrote back.

So my question is: Did/do I have a leg to stand on? Or should I have just taken the voucher and.. run?
