You have not imagined it
bras0978 - this is the "soft landing" between tiers, which is explained in full in the stickied thread at the top of the forum.
If you are able to get 440 more TP before your year ends, you will indeed have Gold to 2018, before dropping to silver for the following year (and bronze the year afterwards) if you don't hit the threshold for gold again.
Having said that, it seems that Gold status can be addictive, so you may find yourself doing it again next year
