The bottom line was that even if United wanted to pull the trigger on A321neoLRs (or just regular neos) I doubt that United could have gotten enough A/C before 2018, which would have really put them in a hole with still very important premium passangers, for whom the 757 is far nicer than a retrofitted 737-900 would have been.
