I'll give Marriott the benefit of the doubt here: I think we have a hotel who genuinely has no idea what this cert is, sees it as some American-issued thing from a decade ago, and has determined that they aren't a participating property. They may not even know how to enter it into a system to get reimbursed by corporate for it.

Honestly, I'd just hang onto it and hand it over at the next U.S. Marriott I visit. If you're getting pushback then, I'd get corporate involved.
