I was in a situation earlier in the week where this happened. My wife was returning from a three week trip in Asia and a visa issue prevented her from leaving China to return home. When she was denied boarding, we cancelled her ticket to prevent it no-showing. American didn't quote the value over the phone because of the challenges calculating the value with Air China and American legs, but we were able to use credit from the ticket less $250 for the international change.
