I asked Air France about Buy on Board! This is their answer
I am disappointed BA customer. I have reached Gold for the first time in October last year based on only traveling Y shorthaul and longhaul (Corporate Policy). However, all of the Y fares were the highest ones (e.g. PAR-LHR-JNB for £2200 or PAR-LHR-SNN for £500). I used to enjoy the complimentary BA service but it has come to a point that I can't justify traveling with them with those prices and on top of that endure the service cuts in Y longhaul (paid for snacks, ambient snack, reduced snack with welcome drink, removed cheese and cracker). I am also Gold with Air France and again with only Y travel. I asked Air France via twitter if they were thinking about BoB? The idea was not to invest in Flying Blue to see cut backs in the Future. Although Air France have actually upgraded their offering with better food on Longhaul and Shrothaul (hot food is still served on routes of more than 2 hours). They also improved their amenity kits in PE and introduced a new Business Class that I have been able to use due to an easier upgrade process using miles (double upgrades are possible from Y to J if on the highest Y fares) which is amazing.
The Air France team has answered back that BoB is not a thing they plan to introduce in the foreseeable future although nothing can be ruled out due to competition. However, they said, that currently they are trying to improve in all cabins and adding a lot of great enhancements like the extension of the digital newspaper app to movies that you can watch the day you fly. They have also said that even if they make changes they will never make radical changes to their elite customers cause these expect the highest standards from Air France and are valuable to them. This is why on HBO fares, Elite customers still get an additional luggage and also can select seats for free.
They have also said that the brand wants to be modern and fresh (cabins, amenity kits, etc.) with a French touch (food, safety video, etc...). They want to remain a quality airline with a differentiated service compared to other European Airlines (legacy or LCC).
Honestly, Air France have become my favorite in Europe on top of Aegean. I feel relaxed when I fly them. I don't worry about grabbing my wallet for a snack or a drink, or being blocked from going to the toilet because of BoB trolley blocking the aisle or the lack of interaction with cabin crews that are busy selling some overrated M&S sandwiches (if they have been loaded).
I used to like BA but it has now become unbearable in Y. With AF it is still an enjoyable experience except may be CDG2. But the lounges are better an cleaner and their airplanes smarter and fresher.
