In theory yes - in practice I would avoid at all costs unless you are from India or feel extremely at home in India. There is basically a slum outside the gates of the hotel and the few U$ you would save would not make up for the stress of doing this walk at night (not that it would be any better in the heat of the day).
Thank you for the reply! Just emailed my SPG ambassador to see about arranging a ride through the hotel. It's my first trip to India and while I usually am comfortable walking around new places I imagine I'll be a little tired after the ~23hrs of travel so will make this as easy as possible
