Specifically, if you want detail, you'll fly into EWR terminal B and clear immigration there (longest lines I've known in spring break time for a non-US passport holder is ~1:30, shouldn't take you longer than 30 minutes most of the time). Then, you pick up bags at the bag claim, walk through customs, and re-check bags at the connections area which can be found just to your left upon exiting the customs hall. Then, take the escalator up to the AirTrain, go to terminal C, and re-clear security for EWR-HNL.
