Frankly, I could care less what UA's reasoning is for requiring BPs; I don't want to have pay more $$$ for access for a guest. The BP requirement is a reasonable policy which limits congestion (to the extent that is even possible) and still permits guests. That's a win/win in my book.
I've thought about this in the past, and understand why the clubs implement tier models (chiefly profit, but crowd control as well).
I like the current UC guest policy, but am also alarmed by things like the meetup thread on this forum. I'm not sure what the official policy says, but in my mind that meetup thread (if used simply for access and not an actual meeting/conversation between like-minded individuals) goes against the spirit of the club. I'm not accusing others, but won't be posting my trips on that thread as it cheapens and devalues the clubs for all paying members--myself included--by bringing unknown and nonpaying guests in when the members is not actually travelling with them.
Same with resale on ebay and such. I believe this is against policy, and in my mind should be policed with a personalized pass system.
That said--if it would reduce crowding I would love to see a tier system where the base membership gets you single pass + a smaller number of guest passes, and an exec gives you unlimited +2, or something similar.
I believe Amex is changing their own guest policy as it relates to family. They have a strong need for crowd control in a lot of the Cent clubs...
