Shouldn't they know who is onboard the aircraft and where they are seated? And what could be so urgent that they need to speak to all of these passengers while flying somewhere over the pacific?

Somebody with a very bad stomach bug who is constantly out of their seat and crew can't find what lav he's in? Somebody who mentioned he was feeling ill before disappearing to self-treat / sit next to a relative? Or somebody who dropped his passport / other belonging that was found and crew don't want to scan 400 names on a manifest?
