Just as a follow on for your next trip or others reading this later transiting China, the only 'major' transit airport in China where through check in is an issue at all is PVG. I don't know why that particular airport still can't seem to get a handle on it, but only a select few airlines there can through check bags. PEK and CAN are a non-issue.
