They probably have research data that tells them how many customers they'd lose at various annual fees, and they're probably already in that sweet spot that maximizes profit. But I don't have to like it!
They could move the annual fee to $2000 if they offered $1750 in easy-to-use travel credit. Or pick any numbers X and (X - $250), as long as X is below the annual travel spend I am willing and able to put on the card.
