And the fact that this does not seem to affect UA/DL combinations would seem to indicate this is largely an AA issue, not a UA issue. Here's what I see in the AA fare rules for end-on-end ticketing which appear to be limiting combinations to AA partners only --

"PROVIDED -
COMBINATIONS ARE FOR CARRIER AA/AS/BB/HA/KS/MQ/WP/WS/
ZK/3M/7H/9K IN ANY RULE IN TARIFF
CPR - BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES-CANADA
DFR - WITHIN THE UNITED STATES
FBRNAPV - WITHIN NORTH AMERICA EXCEPT MEXICO
VPCR - BETWEEN PUERTO RICO/VIRGIN ISLANDS-CANADA
VPDR - BETWEEN PUERTO RICO/VIRGIN ISLANDS-THE USA.

AACBR - BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES-CANADA
AA85R - WITHIN THE UNITED STATES."
