In fact i was just thinking if i can give my companion the op-up seat if there is an op-up. If not i will see if i can use some miles to upgrade our seats to Y+ at check in counter. However Y+ is quite full so don't think the chance is high.
I totally understand how bad it would be to ask for something you don't deserve in the air (like J entree when you are in Y/Y+, or DYKWIA, or ask ISM to extend the perks to their companions) so i always just see this as extras. Some people see op-up as surprise, I just like to see the probability when looking at the inventory numbers. It's somewhat a fun little exercise to do when flying for a personal holiday. Totally not stressing about this at all. It's always just about using the least amount of resources (miles, $) to maximise your travel comfort, subject to a certain range of probability (below certainty). Bad habit as a mathematician.
Maybe I did not ask in a good way as if I have a bad attitude at the very start, or i should not have asked this question at all as a (new) frequent flyer (I should have subscribed to KVS tool or ExpertFlyer)

Anyway, it's always good to learn from other people's perspective.
