I can't find the link today, but I started on one of the visitor info pages for Scarborough and followed links to kayak rental and lesson sites. The photo on the rental site showed 4 or 5 people, all in wetsuits and helmets, on sit-ons. Truth be told, it looked like a beginner's lesson.

Been looking at the links in this thread - thanks for those - and the only problem I see is that those options aren't accessible by train from York. Otherwise the coast looks very tempting.
