I would also suggest Northumberland (I live there!) - several near-shore islands for variety (Coquet, Farne Islands, Holy Island/ Lindisfarne), wildlife and spectacular coastal castles.
North York coast has more cliffs and little fishing village bays, with Scarborough and Whitby having many local attractions and sights.
