Flight diverted - new flight number?

Hi,

UA3541 (op Republic Airlines, YX) was supposed to be DTW-EWR-SDF. But the first leg got diverted to BDL, were it was refulled. Passengers were given the option to disembark. 1:15h later, the plane departed BDL and went to EWR.

In the meanwhile, a different plane was used to fly the second part EWR-SDF.

I would like to know what flight number the BDL-EWR part had. Or do they keep the original flight number? In this situation, that would have resulted in two UA3541 being in the air at the same time, which may be unwise.

And apart from the exact case, what is the protocol in such situations? Keep the original flight number? Assign a new UA code (special code range?)? Assign a new code, but only from the operating carrier (here YX)?
