I would concur with AC on this to be honest. They sold you a pass to Europe. Even though your intention was to go to Istanbul the pass still will get you to Europe.
On the other hand, I do find it abhorrent that almost all airlines can sell you a ticket for $100 but you need to pay $25 to change and $50 to cancel. They haven't sold you anything prosaic or tangible, there is nothing physical to return, simply future travel (which these days isn't even guaranteed).

They set the parameters for this pass, you bought it. Too bad - move on - I say, anyways.
Here is the thing. Would you irritate a good customer over $10k? If that customer had a lifetime spend of $500k? What if you thought that they were likely to spend another $500k if you kept them more or less happy?
I don't think too many businesses rigidly adhere to all of their rules when it comes to keeping their best customers happy. Just telling a customer: "thems the rules, if you don't like it shove off" doesn't strike me as the best response in every case. Particularly if the OP fits into the spend/lifetime spend pattern I described above. I don't hear (or don't recall) the OP saying AC sucks, and I have no idea if he does fit the pattern. But I am giving him the benefit of the doubt.
