The first flight got severely delayed by 9 hours and there was no way to get me to LAX to complete the trip so I called CS and canceled the whole thing.

I asked if there was a way that they could keep the money and let me have the points but was told that because I had used my BA number I had to ring them and see if they would help. (I did start laughing at this comment, BA and "helping" don't get used in the same sentance). He did say that if I had used my AAvantage number they "could work with me on this"

Is all of this right? As part of topping up my points I did a short trip yesterday as well. I have now spent $102 on a waisted trip, been offered no service recovery for having my travel plans canceled and will miss my target of retaining Gold by 200 points as my year ends in June

- I am actually surprised that AA offered you to "help you out" would you credit to AA. Once you decided to cancel the flight and took the full refund, AA would have no obligations.
When your flight was delayed, you could, perhaps, ask for some re-routing or at least take LAS-LAX and back LAS and then request the original avios/tier point credit.
However, even that could be problematic.
I am still having a trouble of getting the original credit for my LAX-DFW-RDU trip that was booked as BA in Y but was on AA metal. Back in Feb AA cancelled my flight and rebooked me through MIA using a very cheap fare class.
The bottom line is that it is easier to get a credit when flying and crediting the same airline vs. other scenarios.
