So as an example, your logic is if a business guy flys DFW-ORD for the morning, stays in ORD for 3 hours then returns to DFW after - if AA cancels or delays the flight, they shouldn't have to help make the flyer whole "because he's already at his destination"?

OP, original routing credit is a bit hard with partners. If you were flying AA, there's no doubt you could have gotten the credit. But with a partner, I'm guessing it's very hard. I might have tried asking to see if you could do something like LAS-PHL/CLT/MIA and back if possible. Long shot, but perhaps doable. That would then credit without issue.
