AA Canceled flights; can I still gain Tier Points?

I was due to do a mileage run this morning on AA to top up my BAEC account. Trip was LAS-LAX-SJO-LAX-LAS. I am in LAS on holiday from the U.K. and go home tomorrow.

The first flight got severely delayed by 9 hours and there was no way to get me to LAX to complete the trip so I called CS and canceled the whole thing.

I asked if there was a way that they could keep the money and let me have the points but was told that because I had used my BA number I had to ring them and see if they would help. (I did start laughing at this comment, BA and "helping" don't get used in the same sentance). He did say that if I had used my AAvantage number they "could work with me on this"

Is all of this right? As part of topping up my points I did a short trip yesterday as well. I have now spent $102 on a waisted trip, been offered no service recovery for having my travel plans canceled and will miss my target of retaining Gold by 200 points as my year ends in June
