The Gatwick Express is rarely the way to go! Just use the regular trains (Southern from Victoria, Thameslink from various places), they're cheaper and only a minute or two slower. Search here and you'll find more details on those
I found the thread with all the info but I'm curious even if it's slower and more expensive, a hired car would be better due to the luggage? If it was just me I'd be okay but would be hard for us to lug around her bags onto the train, than onto another train to a hotel?
