Oh well, sometimes you have to. If it weren't for the silly rule of only letting ticketed passengers through security I wouldn't have to do it on occasion. But I'm not letting my 85 your old grandmother go through security and hope she gets on the correct train to the right airside at MCO. Buying and canceling a refundable ticket is the only way I can make sure she gets on the plane.
Are they refusing you a gate pass at the check-in counter? The last time I got one was around 2010 or so but AFAIK you can still get a gate pass. You just have to go to the check-in counter to get one and need some kind of a valid reason for it.
