Richard; Yeah, but long term; NTT DoCoMo and Vodafone/J-Phone are WCDMA which shares LOADS of common functionality with GSM networks.
Sure KDDI chose the CDMA2000 route.... (Tuka doesn't seem to want to go to any new technology)...
The CDMA "camp" clearly is Japan KDDI, US Sprint + Verizon, Korea SK Telecom + KTF + LG, Ex Russian NMT networks.
CDMA is making inroads in SOME remote markets and for urban WLL , but at the same rate is losing in other markets (e.g. Mexico Telecel switching to GSM, So American networks NOT favoring CDMA on new network installs)
Also TD-SCDMA is dying slowly... The govt is backing off;
