Red Oxx hardware tends to be extremely strong and cutting their products off you without you knowing would be rather hard. I don't think you have to worry about that.
As for the Chica's versatility, I think your needs would be met with it. That said, I'd consider moving up to the Gator.
Thank you for your reply. I now have an issue. I know the Chica will hold an iPad mini, which I have. But, I just bought a 11x8 inch MacBook and that's too big for the Chica. I don't know if I should bring the MacBook on my trip, it just maybe overkill. But, I'd like to be able to have a secure place for the MacBook for future trips and for work. Currently I have a Tumi briefcase with a shoulder strap,but it's quite heavy and it use it for work. Oh, such first world problems!
