Yes, assuming you have a decent credit score etc., you can absolutely get both credit cards.
The SPG Amex would indeed be the best CC for SPG stays IMO.
When it comes to airline bookings it's more complicated IMO. Your main options are:
- earning 2 points / $ with the AMEX Gold (= 2 AE miles per $ spent - which would be fairly valuable since you have SE status)
- earning 1 SPG point / $ (20k SPG points can be converted into 25k airline miles, and with the semi-frequent transfer bonus, you could often convert 20k SPG points into ~33k AE miles)
I'd probably base the decision on whether you expect to have a greater need for SPG points (to be used for award stays) or for AE miles.
