Actually, it is possible. Call the number on the boarding pass for "change of plans" (800-589-5582, option 4), and ask them to offload you. You can then start the process over and change your seat. Did this once when I printed in the wrong seat. They offloaded me, I checked in again with the seat change and was all set with the new seat.
