I've never cared about popularity, just cheapness and speed! However, I agree - particularly with children and luggage, the buses are more of a challenge. The tube would be a sensible compromise, plus the route to T3 is (very, very) marginally more obvious and easy from the underground than the drop-off point for the Central Bus Station.
