Didn't the DC-9 have an 18" seat in Y? I only flew them twice post merger and both times I was in F, which felt more like Y+ with a tight pitch.
According to the internet archive, 17.7" on the DC-9-50 and 17.0" on the -40 and -30.

I can definitely perceive a difference in width. Once you get past a certain point in legroom though (basically once the seat in front of you is no longer jammed into your knees), the extra room really doesn't make much of a difference until you try to open a laptop screen.
