short checking baggage and standby

I realize I am risking problems here, but welcome fellow FT input on this challenge.

Have a D award ticket trip scheduled YOW-YYZ-ATL leaving tomorrow returning Thursday. The award flights are not convenient to my schedule, but this is not a problem because I will use standby rights and there appears to be lots of seat availabilty for the flights I wish to use.

It turns out there is need for an unofficial stopover in YYZ on the way. I am meeting one of my employees there and have something (fairly bulky) to deliver. Of course, baggage is always dicey on a standby flight, but I only need it to go one segment (YOW-YYZ). Question is: Can I ask AC to short check this to YYZ or alternatively, can I simply pick it off the baggage transfer carousel at Terminal 2 before US immigration and walk out with it. (I would return later in the day with my BP sans baggage to carry on to ATL.)

There is a third option: Send the bag by courier and forget this nonsense. But I'm cheap (especially since a paid J ticket YOW ATL is more than $2K.) Any suggestions?
