In most cases it is comparable and at the times in which it is $50-100 more, I usually just book. To me the extra money is worth it because
1) guaranteed seat that isn't a middle,
2) know which flights when I'm scheduled to leave/depart
3) earn miles
4) reaccom if wx/mx/etc.
Really the only value, especially if I have flexibility, are last minute domestic trips that would price out at $700+ or most international premium cabin travel.

My aunt (the employee) mentioned that she has even gotten bumped quite a bit flying as D-1, which means D-3 flying will be even more challenging with my family and work commitments.
