I asked the employee, and was surprised to find buddy pass fares were lower, but not significantly lower, than comparable fares on this domestic route. I'll probably continue booking positive space.
In most cases it is comparable and at the times in which it is $50-100 more, I usually just book. To me the extra money is worth it because
1) guaranteed seat that isn't a middle,
2) know which flights when I'm scheduled to leave/depart
3) earn miles
4) reaccom if wx/mx/etc.
Really the only value, especially if I have flexibility, are last minute domestic trips that would price out at $700+ or most international premium cabin travel.
