A DL (or any other valid ID) is fine for any flight to get you through the checkpoint. The TSA is not obligated to see a passport.
Happened to me at ORD once. Told the TSA ID checker to call a supervisor, as I was not going to show him my passport. Supervisor came over and told the agent to accept my DL. They only need proof of your identity to let you enter. They are not immigration or customs officials.
