btw, security at SFO is not TSA. It's a private contractor (Covenant Security).
I also never have problems at SFO, and I always clear at G. Correct on the private contractor part, they're actually a bit friendlier than most TSA, too.

But at other airports when on an Int'l flight, they sometimes suggest that it's required to show them a passport. I essentially tell them to pound sand until I'm let through.
A DL (or any other valid ID) is fine for any flight to get you through the checkpoint. The TSA is not obligated to see a passport.
