Although I understand the business POV of this of gaining an additional SPG member, if this was done without the knowledge of the member making the reservation, it just causes a lot of administration issues all round.
It is done because the FDA gets a referral fee for any new sign ups. And they can be quite insistent. Happened to my girlfriend on a stay I booked/paid for. But luckily I had warned her of this shady practice and she refused.
